Special Section on
Energy Integration for Sustainability:System Operation
and Business Models
The desire on a secure, efficient, and sustainable energy supply is precipitating significant changes in our energy systems. The high share of renewable energy resource ispaving the way to low-carbon electricity industry;the cutting-edge technologies in energy conversion and storage create unique opportunities to build physical linkages among different energy systems, such as the power grid, the district heating network, and and the natural gas system. In such systems, cascaded usage of energy can boost the overall efficiency.Gas and heat can be easily stored, providing storage-like capabilities to the power grid,so system operating flexibility can be improved, and the usage of renewable energy, whose output is volatile, can be promoted. The proliferation of electric vehicles in modern metropolis helps cyt down the fossil fuel dependency and ameliorate environmental problems by consuming electricity produced from wind and solar power.Electric vehicle charging facilities tightly couple the power grid and the transportion system, bringing opportunity and challenge to the operation of both infrastructures simultaneously. In short, the modern energysupply chain is becoming increasingly interdependent.During this transition, new technical challenges arise, calling for innovative ideas and interdisciplinary research in this promising direction.
